SAIT event attendees with Dena Tompros
I run an organization at Towson University under the Computer Science department called Students for the Advancement of IT (SAIT). Our goal is simple, create opportunities for students to network. Networking is huge in the business world especially when searching for a job after graduation. Yet many students do not realize the importance that building a network plays in landing that dream job. For many students, networking actually ranks particularly low on their priority list. When you’re taking six classes, have three part-time jobs, and run an organization like I do, you’ll quickly understand why this is. We tend to focus more on short-term outcomes like getting an A on a midterm exam or making some extra cash to go out on the weekends.
At SAIT, we seek out individuals with careers that students are interested in and invite them to come speak at our events. This allows students to focus on their classes while still getting their networking fix when it’s convenient for them. At yesterday’s event, we went one step further and sponsored a free luncheon for all who were interested. Dena Tompros, president of Prognosis, came to talk with students about her experience in the field of project and program management. Dena has over twenty years of experience in the industry and was able to offer some very insightful advice to students. This event turned out to be our most successful event yet with almost 40 students attending the two sessions. Many students admitted they only came for the free pizza but we won’t hold it against them.
